Hit-and-Run Involving Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Car Results In Arrest, Drugs and Money Seized

Additional Charges on Man Arrested Following Hit-and-Run Involving Patrol Car

[Rockingham County, N.C.]— Rockingham County Sheriff’s Narcotics Detectives have charged DAMON JAMONT BLACKWELL, 29, of Reidsville, N.C. with Felony Drug Trafficking of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia in connection to the drug found in Blackwell’s car following the vehicle pursuit last Thursday night.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is being consulted on possible federal charges for the Cocaine also found in Blackwell’s vehicle following the pursuit. Blackwell’s is currently being held in the Rockingham County Detention Facility under a $1.75 million secured bond.

(Wentworth, NC) – On Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at around 8:22 p.m., while on routine patrol travelling on Grooms Rd. in Reidsville, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Wiseman’s patrol vehicle was struck by a Gray in color 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Suspect Vehicle). Deputy Wiseman activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle after it struck him, but the Suspect Vehicle then fled. Deputy Wiseman and K-9 “Buttercup”, who was also in Deputy Wiseman’s patrol car, pursued the Suspect Vehicle.

While attempting to elude Deputy Wiseman’s pursuit, the Suspect Vehicle crashed into a tractor-trailer on US 29 Bypass near McWalker Rd. in Reidsville The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The driver of the vehicle and only occupant of the Suspect Vehicle fled the wrecked vehicle and ran on foot down the side of the roadway. Deputy Wiseman exited his vehicle, gave chase and caught up to the Suspect, at which time the Suspect began fighting Deputy Wiseman in an effort to escape. A Good Samaritan, who will not be named out of safety concerns, saw the Deputy and Suspect struggling on the side of the road and stopped to aid Deputy Wiseman in his efforts to place the Suspect into custody.

The Suspect was found to be DAMON JAMONT BLACKWELL, 29, of Reidsville, N.C. Blackwell was transported to a local area hospital for a checkup and treatment of minor injuries following the crash.

The Suspect Vehicle Blackwell was operating was seized. Rockingham County Deputies and Investigators located 35 pounds of Marijuana (having an approximate street value of $60,000), 1.4 kilos of Cocaine (having an approximate street value of $60,000) and $4,500 in cash inside the Suspect Vehicle.

Deputy Wiseman and K-9 “Buttercup” were not injured in the Hit-and-Run, the vehicle pursuit that followed, or the struggle with Blackwell to apprehend him. The Good Samaritan was not injured while aiding Deputy Wiseman in apprehending Blackwell.

Blackwell was charged and arrested upon his release from the hospital with Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer, Assault on a Government Official, Resist, Delay and Obstruct, Flee to Elude Arrest, Reckless Driving to Endanger, Failure to Yield, Driving While License Revoked, Hit-and-Run, Leaving Scene with Property Damage, Failure to Stop for Flashing Blue Lights, and a Speed Violation.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers investigated the vehicle collisions.

Damon Jamont Blackwell was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Facility under a $500,000. secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 3rd.

Charges for the drugs seized as a result of this incident will be forthcoming after Rockingham County Sheriff’s Narcotics Investigators consult with District Attorney Jason Ramey.
