Sheriff Commends Deputy’s Life Saving Actions

Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office News Release  •  September 8, 2017  •  Sgt. K. Suthard, PIO

(Wentworth, NC) – Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Moore was on routine Boat Patrol of Belews Lake on Monday September 4, 2017.

On that day, at around 4:30 p.m., Deputy Moore observed a boat, which was having engine problems near Humphrey’s Ridge. Another boat had pulled up alongside of the nonoperational boat and threw them a rope offering to tow them back to the boat landing. As the towing boat pulled off and the rope got tout between the boats, an occupant of the rear boat, later identified as Robby Dilmore of 3471 Transou Rd. Plafftown, N.C., got his right ankle caught up in the rope and went into the water.

Mr. Dilmore appeared to be struggling to keep his head above water and was still entangled in the tow rope. Deputy Matt Moore jumped into the water, freed the gentlemen from the rope and assisted him back up on his boat.

“I commend Deputy Moore for his quick actions on Monday that helped to save a man’s life. He should be proud… I know I’m very proud of him.” –Sheriff Sam Page

In addition to being assigned to the Sheriff’s Boat Patrol during the summer months, Deputy Moore serves as the School Resource Officer for the Bethany Elementary, Bethany Charter, Huntsville Elementary and Stoneville Elementary Schools during the school year.
