Red For Newborns

(Eden, NC) – Newborns are getting in on the American Heart Association’s commemoration of Heart Month, celebrated each February.

Feb. 7 through Feb. 14 is Congenital Heart Defect Week. Each newborn delivered at The Birthing Center at Morehead Memorial Hospital during February is being given a handmade red hat to wear instead of the more traditional pink or blue hat.

Raising that awareness, as well as spreading information about heart disease, the nation’s number one killer, is why Morehead chose to participate in the American Heart Association event which is called “Little Hats, Big Hearts.”

“Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defect in the United States,” said Heidi Brown, Director of The Birthing Center. All of the hats have been knitted or crocheted by volunteers and will fit preemies, newborns and 3-month olds.
