LTE: Medicaid Expansion Could Preserve Jobs
I have been privileged to care for patients at Smith-McMichael Cancer Center over the past five years. I have witnessed hardworking, skilled, and compassionate employees lose their jobs due to the financial hardships of Morehead Memorial Hospital. I have seen patients cope with cancer while expressing concerns about the longevity of our hospital. Currently, the N.C. State legislature is debating whether Medicaid expansion should be accepted in our state. Medicaid expansion could preserve jobs at Morehead Memorial and protect my patients’ access to local health care. My patients should not have to commute up to an hour and a half daily for treatment. Citizens of all political parties recognize the value of Medicaid expansion for Rockingham County. I encourage local constituents to call upon Senator Phil Berger, Representative Bert Jones, and Representative Kyle Hall to reach across party lines and strengthen Morehead Memorial Hospital through Medicaid expansion.
