Craig Travis on the ballot for Rockingham County Commissioner

(Rockingham County, NC) – Craig Travis, a native of Rockingham County and a veteran of the US Navy, received the Republican nomination Thursday to replace Robert Wilson on the ballot for Rockingham County Commissioner this fall.

Travis received more than 1150 votes in the May primary, falling just short of the nomination outright.

“I received a call last Friday morning from Robert Wilson informing me of his decision to quit the race for county commissioner due to personal reasons,” Travis said. “I was saddened to hear Robert’s decision, and I told him that he and his family would be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope all of you will keep him and his family in your prayers.”

Building on his strong showing in the primary, Travis is encouraged by the support he continues to receive.

“My campaign message was about unity within the Republican Party and because of that I feel we attracted a lot of new energy and volunteers,” Travis said. “As we continue that mission I have no doubt that we will resume building fresh energy and commitment to conservative ideas in Rockingham County.”

Travis remains committed to creating a better quality of life for all residents in Rockingham County. His campaign themes are founded on the following ideas:

1. We must reorganize county government to reign in spending. We must have priorities for our limited tax dollars. This will help identify areas where savings can be made.

2. We must solve the problems created by the amount of illegal immigrants putting stress on our social systems, public education and public safety.

3. We must continue to sharpen the three prong focus of economic development in the county: increasing retail activity to improve sales tax income, promoting industrial development along the US 220 corridor and seeing the NC158/68 connector become a reality. This broad approach benefits citizens from across the community and will lead to a better employment situation. Improved transportation and connection to major transportation/distribution centers in Greensboro, when combined with the high quality of life offered in the county, can only increase our marketability to potential business and industry. Continued rebranding of the county’s natural and cultural resources is a vital component of improving the business climate.

Travis believes we must reconnect citizens with their local government. Too often, average people see government as an oppressive force that pays little heed to common sense.  We must bring an end to special interest politics in this county. We must have leaders willing to make hard decisions, not delay unpopular decisions until no one is looking.

Travis is a dedicated father to his two sons. He intends to represent the people with the regular common sense residents of Rockingham County use to run their households.

Congratulations Sgt. Woodall

(Wentworth, NC) – - The North Carolina Association of Student Resource Officers is a not-for-profit association of law enforcement officers and school officials who work to ensure a safe and secure learning environment throughout the schools in North Carolina. With approximately 350 members from across the state, the association has 8 regions.

At a recent conference held at Sea Trails Resort in Sunset Beach, Sgt. Shane Woodall was voted to represent region 5. This region includes Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Person, Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Davidson, Randolph and Chatham counties. This selection will allow Sgt. Woodall to communicate monthly with other members and serve as a link to the board of directors for a 2 year term.

Sgt. Woodall is a student resource officer at McMichael High School in Mayodan. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 1999.

Sexual Assault

Incident location: Stoneville area

Victim: 14 year old female

(Stoneville, NC) – On a Saturday afternoon in July, the victim was riding as front seat passenger in a car with Phillip Madison. He drives a church bus and was out in the community “confirming” passengers for the upcoming Sunday services.

Madison placed his hand inside her clothing and fondled her.

Detective Mike Smith investigated the incident.

Phillip Madison, 49, of 200 Badger Road in Reidsville is charged with 1 count of Indecent Liberties with a Child. His bond is $20,000 and his first court appearance is August 10, 2010 in Wentworth.

(Eden, NC) – The Eden Parks & Recreation Department began its brand new Youth Kickball league on Wednesday evening at Freedom Park as two games were played. The Yankees defeated the Braves by a score of 9-2 in the first game. Jadakiss Jumper booted six hits for the winners while Hunter Vault added three and Tristen Smith two. Amari Simpson, Devin Perdue and Alondre Simpson had two hits each for the Braves.

The Dodgers overpowered the Red Sox 13-2 in the final game. Seth Gammons, Kurtis Mullins and Angela Mullins had four hits each for the winners. Tyler Bruins and Nocarius Wilkerson topped the Red Sox with three hits apiece while Jacob Bruins added two.

Also, the Eden Parks and Recreation Department is checking to see if there is enough interest for a Wooden Bat League.  Anyone interested should contact the Parks & Recreation office at 623-7789 Ext. 3026 or tvernon@edennc.us.

Football practices will begin on August 17th at the Bridge Street Rec.  The Pee Wee league (ages 8 & 9) will practice at 4:00 and the Midgets (ages 10, 11 & 12) will practice at 5:00.  Flag Tag league (ages 4 thru 7) will practice on Monday, August 30^th at 4:00 P.M. at the center where the youth sign up.
