[MADISON, NC]— On Thursday May 17, 2012 at 6:56pm, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, along with other Emergency Rescue Personnel, responded to Lindsey Bridge Rd. in Madison near the Dan River Spillway when it was reported that a young man had possibly drown at that location.

Upon the arrival of Sheriff’s Deputies, Steven Gene Sizemore, age 20, of Sandy Ridge, NC was found on the river bank at that location with First Responders performing CPR on Sizemore at that time.

According to eye witness reports, Sizemore was at that location with several friends, two of which were swimming in the Dan River and got caught up in the current and were washed over the spillway.

Sizemore jumped into the River attempting to aid his friends, and became caught up in the current as well. Sizemore’s friends were able to make it to shore, but Sizemore was pulled under water by the current and subsequently drown.

CPR continued on Sizemore as he was transported to Moses Cone Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The names of the two other individuals swept over the spillway are not being released at this time.

Want to be a little more eco-friendly or “green” in your home? It’s really not that hard to replace some of the harsh, noxious-smelling chemicals you use with more natural alternatives. Substances such as vinegar, essential oils, and baking soda can be just as effective as their more costly counterparts, but won’t be as harsh on you, your family or the environment. Consumers are being encouraged like never before to use “green” products that do not harm or pollute.

Nontoxic household cleaners are a great way to keep your home green and clean. There are many ways to reduce pollution, starting in the environment where you and your family spend most of your time…your home. Here are some alternative cleaning options to consider. These cleaning items are things you might find in any kitchen. As with all household products, always keep out of reach of children and pets.

• Abrasive Cleanser – Mix equal parts salt and baking soda. Scrub with wet sponge. Rinse with warm water.

• Air Fresheners – Mix baking soda, fresh flowers, essential oils, vanilla or herbs and place in areas of your home that need a little refreshing. You can soak a cotton ball with oils or other natural scents and place in inconspicuous areas of your home (out of the reach of little hands)

• All Purpose Cleaner – Mix one-quarter cup of vinegar with one gallon of hot water. Also, baking soda, diluted liquid soap (not detergent), or borax are good cleaners.

• Bathroom Cleaner – Scrub area with baking soda and wet sponge. Rinse with all-purpose cleaner.

• Brass or Copper Polish – Mix one teaspoon salt, tablespoon of flour and vinegar to make a thick paste. Rub on surface and let dry. Rinse in warm soapy water and buff dry.

• Disinfectants – Use 1/2 cup borax in one gallon of water. Salt is also a natural cleanser, disinfectant, and mild abrasive. Mix salt with white vinegar or lemon juice for general cleaning around the house, including surfaces such as glass and tile. Salt will also remove coffee and food stains from dishes, cups and other kitchen utensils.

• Drain Cleaner – Pour 1/4 cup of baking soda down drain; follow with 1/2 cup of vinegar. After fizzing stops, flush with boiling water. You can also use a plunger to remove more stubborn clogs.

• Flea and Tick Products – Put brewer’s yeast or garlic in pet’s food; sprinkle fennel, rue, rosemary or eucalyptus seeds or leaves around animal sleeping areas.

• Floor Cleaner – Mix one-half cup of white vinegar with one-half gallon of warm water. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding your floor’s particular requirements.

• Furniture Polish – Mix one-half cup of lemon juice in one cup of mineral or vegetable oil.

• Furniture Stripper – Use sandpaper as much as possible and avoid chemicals. I have even stripped old brass door plates using nothing but boiling water and a little elbow grease!

• Glass Cleaner – Mix one tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice in one quart of water, spray on and use newspaper to wipe dry. This works well on auto windows, too!

• Mothballs – Use cedar chips, lavender flowers, rosemary, mint, white peppercorns.

• Oven Cleaner – After oven cools, use steel wool and baking soda; for tougher stains, add salt (not for use on self-cleaning or continuous cleaning ovens).

• Pesticides – Planting marigolds in your garden will ward off certain pests and give your flower beds a beautiful pop of color.

• Pet Stain Cleaner – Mix one-quarter cup of white vinegar and one-quarter cup of clear liquid soap. Always check colorfastness by testing a small hidden spot first. Rub into stain and then blot. Rinse with warm water.

• Plant Sprays – Wipe leaves with mild soap and water, rinse.

• Roach and Ant Repellent – Sprinkle powdered boric acid in cabinet edges, baseboards and cracks. For ants: place chili powder, talcum powder or powdered chalk at entry points.

• Rug Deodorizer – Sprinkle liberally with baking soda, wait fifteen minutes and vacuum.

• Toilet Bowl Cleaner – Use a toilet brush and baking soda or vinegar.

• Upholstery and Rug Cleaner – Use dry cornstarch. Cornstarch absorbs greasy stains. Sprinkle lightly, wait a few minutes and vacuum with brush attachment.

Many of these tips were gleaned from various municipal and consumer websites, encouraging people to try alternatives to harsh cleaners. I have tried several of these and found them to be effective replacements for strong chemical products. Happy “green” cleaning!

Sharing helpful tips and knowledge of consumer affairs seems like a natural extension of my lifelong interest in customer relations. Having been involved in some form of customer service throughout my work career with the United States Postal Service, Rockingham County Schools, the U.S. Census and various other personal endeavors, I have seen firsthand the impact of consumer education. Personally, I have occasionally experienced the negative consequences of not being fully informed before making a consumer decision. I find it fun and rewarding to do my homework prior to making purchases and financially prudent to ask plenty of questions. My hope is that some of the suggestions I share in my writing will inform and help others in their decision-making. Obviously, my experience is subjective and it is written merely to provoke thought rather than be a guide.
