Kasten kills his mother
Call received: September 1, 2010 at 10:17 a.m.
Location of incident: 140 Ridge Crest Drive, Stoneville, NC 27048
Reporting officer: Cpl. Frank Martin
Victim: Carla Kasten, 57, of 140 Ridge Crest Drive
(Stoneville, NC) – A disturbance was reported at 140 Ridge Crest by a neighbor. The caller indicated possible injury to the lady at that address, the possibility of a firearm being involved, and the suspect had set the house on fire.
When deputies arrived, Mrs. Kasten was inside the house, a victim of an assault, and obviously deceased. The house was on fire and a significant amount of smoke had filled the house.
Cpl. Martin found an unclothed man in the back yard. He gave instructions for the man to submit himself, but rather the man attempted to escape. Cpl Martin used a taser to apprehend the suspect. Fire personnel arrived to extinguish the fire to the rear of the residence.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for examination, and was then brought to the Sheriff’s Office for questioning. He has now been identified, charged, and will be in the Rockingham County Detention Facility without bond pending his first court appearance.
He is the son of the victim and her actual cause of death has not yet been determined.
