The 24th annual event is on tap for Saturday, September 11 in downtown Mayodan from 10am until 10pm.

Homecoming offers an opportunity for the community and beyond to come together for a day of fun to enjoy a wide variety of food, arts and crafts, kid’s activities, live entertainment, informational displays and more. More information and photos from last year’s festival can be found on the Mayodan Homecoming Festival FACEBOOK page.

As a special addition to this year’s festival, the newly established Downtown Mayodan Merchants Association is sponsoring a CRUISE-IN from 11am to 4pm on Main Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. All types of vehicles are welcome. Owners will receive a goody bag courtesy of downtown Mayodan merchants. There will also be door prizes and tickets available for a 50/50 drawing. For more information on the cruise-in, call 336-548-2273.

One of the highlights of Homecoming is the awesome array of live on-stage entertainers. Don’t miss a minute of the lineup beginning at 10:00am and continuing into the evening until 10:00pm.

Plenty of top notch entertainment for your listening pleasure is featured during the earlier hours of the festival.

Opening ceremonies at 10am features the MCMICHAEL HIGH SCHOOL marching band and choral ensemble, along with the ROTC unit presenting our nation’s colors.

At 11:00am, the dance students of CC DANCE COMPANY take the spotlight. From beginners to experienced dancers, you will enjoy their entertaining routines.

The 2:00pm slot brings GOD’S GARAGE BAND to the Homecoming stage. This group uses their talents to spread their gospel message through contemporary song and message.

At 4:00pm we welcome CREST FALLEN, a local rock cover band with musicians from several Rockingham County schools. High energy sound has become a trademark of the band with genres of 70s through today. Covers include Aerosmith, Van Halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bon Jovi and Guns & Roses.

On stage at 6pm to kick off the evening street dance is Mayodan’s own THE IMPACTS, five seasoned musicians featuring your favorite rock and roll oldies and beach tunes of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Impacts have been entertaining audiences since 2005 and are well known in Rockingham County and beyond from both private and public events. The instruments used are vintage style, much like what was used in the original recordings, giving an authentic sound. If you were around in the early days of rock and roll, the sounds of The Impacts will certainly bring back a lot of great memories. If you were not, you will see first hand the excitement of the great music of that era. Whether you like the British invasion, American pop, Motown or Carolina beach music, you will enjoy listening or dancing to the familiar tunes of the Impacts. They are the 2009 Carolina Beach Music Group of the Year, as well as the co-winners (with the Band of Oz) of the Cammy Group of the Year. The annual golf tournament is in its 9th year of raising funds for cancer patients in Rockingham County.

“The fund has raised over $200,000 to date to help with everyday expenses of cancer patients and their families living in Rockingham County, but 2010 is playing out to be our biggest challenge,” states Jennifer Joyce, chairwoman of the golf tournament and daughter of Barry Joyce.

In 2009, there were more than 125 golfers and more than 50 local businesses who supported the fund. Several previous sponsors have already committed to 2010 like Morehead Hospital, State Farm Insurance and Bridgestone Aircraft Tire USA, but many sponsorship packages are still available. Sponsorships range from $300 to $5000.

Sponsors like Ameriprise Financial in Madison have been partners since the initial tournament in 2002 because the need could not be greater. “We see every day the struggles of many in Rockingham County” states Mark Casey of Ameriprise. ” Battling cancer is a tough fight that too often is made more difficult for the patient and family because of limited financial resources. We wanted to help those victims and the Barry L. Joyce Local Cancer Fund really does do that.”

Jennifer encourages businesses to get involved. “Sponsorship is a great way for companies in Rockingham County and the Piedmont Triad to show their support for our local community. Over 20% of the cancer patients in Rockingham County have no insurance. 100% of donations go directly to them to help with expenses that may seem small to us, but really important for people coping with such a difficult disease. “

The Barry L. Joyce Local Cancer Support Fund was founded in 2001 to assist uninsured, under insured, and financially challenged cancer patients living in Rockingham County. Barry’s vision was to create a fund to help cancer patients cover everyday expenses such as gas, groceries, and heating bills so they can focus on the challenge of beating cancer.

And to top it off, they’re going to be having fun doing it.

People from around the region will be traveling to Ruffin, N.C., to get lost in a five-acre corn maze at Oakhaven Properties. The maze, which is dedicated to honor the late Adam Petty and Victory Junction, is the highlight of several activities for families to experience at Oakhaven.

Paul Setliff, of Oakhaven Properties, was serving as a public relations representative in NASCAR in May 2000 when Adam Petty lost his life. It’s a day Setliff will not soon forget.

“It seems hard to believe he has been gone for 10 years,” said Setliff. “But his legacy is alive and well. Before his death, Adam had a dream to create a place of solitude and hope for sick children. Through Victory Junction, kids are living out his dream. We wanted to honor Adam and help raise money for an amazing organization that is touching the lives of so many great kids.”

The maze design will feature Adam’s likeness and the familiar “Keeping the Dream Alive” logo.

With the help of The Pumpkin Patch, of Browns Summit, NC, all profits from on-location pumpkin sales will be donated to Victory Junction.

“We want families to come and spend a day in the maze and purchase a pumpkin while they’re here. What a great way to welcome Fall. Much of the proceeds are going to help a bunch of deserving kids,” said Patience Ergish, owner of Oakhaven Properties, LLC.

Oakhaven’s Corntacular Adventure will open Sept. 1 and remain available to visit through Halloween. The farm is located in the Northeast corner of Rockingham County along Highway 29. With more than 1200 acres of rolling hills and farmland, it is one of Rockingham County’s best kept secrets.

Designed for families of all ages, the Corntacular Adventure features the corn maze, 30’ x 80’ jumping pillow, corn cannon, hay rides, Kiddy Train, Sand Mountain, Rubber Duck races and many other activities.

Victory Junction is a year-round camping environment for children ages six to 16 with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son Adam, the camp is located in Randleman, NC with a second location opening soon in Kansas City, KS. Victory Junction offers programs for 24 disease groups and maintains strong relationships with 30 partner hospitals. Victory Junction’s mission is to provide life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, in a safe and medically-sound environment. As a not-for-profit organization, the camp operates solely through the support of generous donors to provide this experience at no charge to children and their families. For more information or to donate, visit www.victoryjunction.org.

(Eden, NC) – “Any chance to visit Charlie Poole’s home town of Spray (Eden ),NC, and celebrate the greatness of her native son is one to be taken.” —so says Loudon Wainwright III , winner of this year’s Best Traditional Folk Grammy Award with his album “High, Wide and Handsome: the Charlie Poole Project.”.

And celebrating the greatness of Spray’s native son is just what he will be doing on Saturday, September 25. He has agreed to do a benefit performance at the picturesque Governor Morehead Park in Spray, directly across the street from the textile mills where famed banjoist Charlie Poole worked between his rambles.

“An Evening with Loudon Wainwright III” will be an evening of national caliber entertainment, with good food to make it complete—Fuzzy’s of Madison will be catering a barbecue supper, all included in the $25 ticket price. Wainwright will be coming fresh from a performance as part of the Duke University concert series.

The proceeds are to help Piedmont Folk Legacies, parent of the Charlie Poole Music Festival, in its effort to save the huge historic Nantucket Mill by turning it into the National Banjo Center, and to help the park itself deal with the crumbling foundation wall of the area’s very first textile mill. Wainwright requests that all proceeds should remain in Spray out of respect for Charlie Poole.

Gates will open at 5 PM on September 25, and the barbecue will be served at 6.

The opening act at 7 PM will be Kinney Rorrer’s widely acclaimed New North Carolina Ramblers. Wainwright will take the stage at 8 with his act that he has taken all over the US and Canada since Grammy night.

Tickets at $25 each will be sold on line at www.charlie-poole.com through Friday, September 17, or can be ordered with a check to Piedmont Folk Legacies, P.O. Box 867, Eden, NC 27289. A table for 8 can be reserved for $200. No tickets will be sold at the gate. For information, call 336-623-1043 or 336-627-0816.
