DRBA TENTH YEAR CELEBRATION MARCH 3 IN DANVILLE

- – -

BIRTHDAY FESTIVITIES AT PEPSI BUILDING

- – -

After-Meeting Hike On Danville’s Riverwalk

- – -

Come and celebrate the Dan River Basin Association’s Tenth Anniversary!

DRBA’s Annual Celebration honoring its first decade will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, in the Pepsi Building at The Crossing, 661 Craghead Street, Danville, Virginia (GPS 36.584404,-79.385639). The public is invited free of charge.

The day’s activities will include all the major elements of DRBA’s mission—preserving and promoting the region’s rivers and culture through education, recreation and stewardship. In addition, a look back over DRBA’s many successes during its first ten years will provide inspiration for the coming years’ efforts in the multi-county, bi-state river basin.

After a half hour to enjoy refreshments and view displays, the short business session will include recognition of exceptional volunteer service, election of board members, and staff reports on the Association’s extensive activities in Virginia and North Carolina during the past year, as well as a glimpse of the year ahead.

Featured as the Celebration’s speaker is one of DRBA’s founding members, Dr. Lindley S. Butler of Wentworth. As a senior North Carolina historian and author of numerous books and articles on local, state, and regional history, Butler is uniquely qualified to present a program on his topic—Dan River Basin Association: Past, Present, and Future.

Encompassing portions of sixteen counties in Virginia and North Carolina in its 3300-square-mile watershed, the Dan River Basin includes six rivers—the Mayo, Smith, Sandy, Banister, Hyco, and, of course, the Dan. The Dan River Basin Association was formed in 2002 to preserve and promote the region’s abundant natural and cultural resources.

Recognizing that this beautiful area, extending from the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the broad waters of Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake, shares a history of reliance on the rivers for transportation, commerce, and industry, DRBA provides a unified vision of cooperation across geographic boundaries.

Butler has provided leadership for DRBA, serving as a founding board member and officer. He spearheaded efforts that ensured the establishment of the Mayo River State Park in North Carolina and the Gravely Nature Preserve in Virginia. In addition, his work on the historic batteau navigation structures in the Dan River earned the placement of many of these structures on the National Register of Historic Places.

Members and guests will hear reports from the Association’s staff, including Executive Director Tiffany Haworth and program managers and coordinators from DRBA’s four offices—Collinsville, Virginia, and Danbury, Yanceyville, and Eden, North Carolina.

Following the meeting and lunch provided by each participant, around 1:15 p.m. DRBA members and guests will join Danville Parks, Recreation & Tourism’s Outdoor Director Karen Cross on a hike on Danville’s Riverwalk. This eight-mile paved trail is a model for trails in the region. Learn more at www.danvilletrails.com.

Participants in the Celebration are asked to bring a picnic lunch to be eaten at the Pepsi Building, or plan to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant of their choosing. Those joining in the after-lunch hike should wear hiking boots or walking shoes and dress in layers.

Directions: To reach the Pepsi Building, from US 58 Business in downtown Danville, take Main Street south across the Dan River and turn left at the first traffic light onto Craghead Street. Follow that for about 5 blocks until you see the sign for The Crossing at the Dan. The Pepsi Building is on the left beside the parking lot.

From the Danville Expressway, US 29/US 58, turn north onto Goodyear Boulevard (State Route 737). Stay on Goodyear until it ends at Industrial Avenue. Turn right onto Industrial, which will become Craghead Street. Follow Craghead until you see the sign for The Crossing at the Dan. The Pepsi Building is on the right beside the parking lot.

Meetings and outings of the Dan River Basin Association are free and open to the public. For information about the celebration or the hike, contact T Butler, members@danriver.org or 336-349-5727.

Membership information is available at www.danriver.org.

Duane Best Auditorium located at Morehead High School in Eden.

Last year 33 contestants in 29 acts competed for cash prizes in the Foundation’s inaugural event which raised $7,500 for patient assistance and the Best Auditorium seat replacement project.

Auditions for this year’s production will be held on Saturday, February 18, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Best Auditorium. Audition forms are available online at www.morehead.org under “News & Events,” and at the following Eden locations:

• The Front Porch, 702 Washington Street ;

• Party Plus, 349 W. Kings Highway;

• The Small Pleasures Gift Shop at Morehead Memorial Hospital; 117 E. Kings Highway; and,

• The Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation office, 618 S. Pierce Street (in the Wright Diagnostic Center).

Audition forms must be turned in to the Morehead Hospital Foundation by Friday, February 10.

Jennifer Boyte, the Foundation’s Annual Fund Chairman, said the event is being held earlier this year to give talent from area dance and drama groups a chance to participate before dance competitions start in the spring. The show will be at an earlier time, a matinee at 3 p.m., so people who do not like to drive at night will be able to get home before dark.

“There will be seven (7) cash prizes ranging from $200 to $50, plus the popular People’s Choice Award,” stated Ed Holbrook, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are looking for different types of acts for the Talent Show. If you can juggle, do magic acts, play various musical instruments, dramatic readings, comedy, ventriloquism, or puppetry—anything that is entertaining and in good taste—then you are who we are looking for to showcase in this year’s Talent Show.”

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to Morehead Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Care Program and to help establish a Healthcare Scholarship that will benefit a graduating senior at Morehead High School.

For more information about the “Eden’s Got Talent Show” or the purchase of tickets, please call the Foundation office at (336) 627-6334. Tickets will be on sale the last week of January and will available at The Front Porch, Party Plus and the Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation office.

The public is invited to attend. From 1-1:30 p.m., re-enactors will speak about the war in the Humanities building, room 210. At 1:30 p.m., they will begin their demonstrations and maneuvers on the quad.

Re-enactors will demonstrate drills, marching, turning, shoulder arms and a firing simulation. Volunteers from the audience will be invited to participate in a portion of these exercises. The public will also be able to look at and inspect the material aspects of the war – uniforms, guns, tent gear and more.

The original 26th North Carolina was one of the most famous units in the state. Members fought in northern and southern conflicts and were present at Appomattox. With over 275 members, it is currently the single largest re-enactment unit in North Carolina and one of the largest in the country.

Over 30,000 North Carolinians died during the Civil War. RCC invites you to rediscover the heritage of this area through the re-enactment of the 26th North Carolina.

Greetings,

American Legion Post 254 plans to bring the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall to Freedom Park in Eden, NC. To successfully complete the project for our community, we need the city, individuals, businesses and corporations to endorse this event with their financial contributions and volunteer hours.

Our aim is simple. With your support in June 2013 we will bring the Wall to Freedom Park for everyone to enjoy. This is a once in a lifetime event for Rockingham County and surrounding areas.

Some facts about the Wall:

• There are 58,267 names listed on the Wall which includes those added in 2010.

• Listed by the US Department of Defense as being killed on June 8, 1956, the first known casualty, Richard B. Fitzgibbon, Jr. of North Weymouth, MA is listed on the Wall as well as his son Richard B. Fitzgibbon, III who was killed on September 7, 1965.

• There are three sets of fathers and sons and 31 sets of brothers on the Wall.

• The largest age group represented on the Wall with 39,996 names is for soldiers 22 and younger.

Within this group:

• 8,282 were 19 years old

• 33,103 were 18 years old

• 12 were 17 years old

• 5 were 16 years old

• the youngest soldier at just 15 years old was PFC Dan Bullock

• 997 soldiers were killed on their first day and 1, 448 were killed on their last day in Vietnam.

• With a population of 475, Beallsville, OH lost 6 sons. The state of West Virginia had the highest per capita casualty rate in the nation.

To those of us who survived the war and to the families of those who did not, we see the faces. We feel the pain that these numbers created. On earth we are haunted by these numbers because they were our friends, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons and daughters. There are no noble wars – just noble warriors.

Join our project with your financial contribution. Use the attached envelope or send your contribution to:

American Legion Post 254, P. O. Box 852, Eden, NC 27289-0852.

For additional information or to volunteer with the project, call 336-209-2535.

Sincerely yours,

David Turner
