(Eden, NC) – In what can be described as a “Rocky Start” to the Morehead High School 2011-2012 Football Season, the Panthers dropped their first Home Game of the season to the Warriors of Magna Vista with a 16-49 loss.

Morehead looked to provide a strong offense, with a drive deep into Warrior territory on their second drive, however, Panther starting quarterback Dez McDaniel left the game with an apparent injury following that drive, and backup Stephen Greeson was hard-pressed to get anything going against the Warriors, until the 4th quarter when the Panthers would score two touchdowns to add to the 1st Quarter Safety the panthers achieved in the first quarter following a blocked punt that rolled into the end zone for 2 points.

The Magna Vista Warriors held Morehead to 203 total yards of offense, while taking 577 yards of offense for themselves.

Rockingham Update’s camera was at Panther Stadium for the match-up and we have the action for you in the above video from the Opening Kick-off to the final whistle.

(Rockingham County, NC) – On Thursday, August 4, 2011, 2,958 fans visited NewBridge Bank Park and watched the Panthers from Ledford High School defend their 2010 title to win the NewBridge Bank Jamboree Cheerleading Competition for the second year in a row. The spirited event, presented by Solis Women’s Health, featured 23 local high schools from Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Rockingham, and Stokes Counties. Ragsdale High School came in second place followed by Northwest Guilford High School in third. The Rams from Reidsville High School won the Spirit Award for the third year in a row.

Five former and current University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill cheerleaders judged the competition. “All the teams brought spirit for their schools, passion for their sport, and overall excellence to the field,” said Amanda Long, head judge. “We had an incredibly tough decision. Ledford High School’s superior execution of their routine placed them on top but all the teams deserve recognition for their tremendous performances.”

Tyson Hammer, Events and Community Relations Manager for NewBridge Bank, commented on the overall success of the evening. “Last night’s event was the largest Jamboree Cheerleading Competition to date. Coming into the event we had already raised over $46,000 through the generous donations of 271 area businesses and fans. The support of these sponsors, combined with last night’s record-breaking attendance, positions us to meet our total fund-raising goal of $120,000.”

The NewBridge Bank Invitational Football and Cheerleading Jamboree is the largest fund-raising effort led by NewBridge Bank each year. In addition to the Cheerleading Competition, the Jamboree includes preseason Football Scrimmages scheduled for Friday, Aug. 12. The Bank underwrites all the events so that one hundred percent of the proceeds benefit the athletic programs of the participating high schools. Since the Jamboree’s inception in 1999, NewBridge Bank has awarded over $470,000 to local high schools.

For the first time, NewBridge Bank has expanded the Jamboree into Forsyth County, adding four schools and Forsyth Football Scrimmages presented by Champion at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. The four new high schools competed last night and are all from Forsyth County – Carver, Glenn, Mount Tabor and Reagan.

As in years past, the Bank will also host Football Scrimmages at West Davidson High School in Lexington and Rockingham County High School in Reidsville. Each site will feature eight local high schools’ varsity and junior varsity football teams. Gates to all three sites will open at 5 p.m., with the first scrimmages kicking off at 6 p.m. Tickets to each event are $5 at the door with free admission for children ages six and under.

In addition to the Cheerleading Competition and Football Scrimmages, NewBridge Bank will host its annual Jamboree Luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 10, celebrating 2011 Honorary Chairman Jim Grobe, the head football coach of Wake Forest University’s Demon Deacons, as well as participating schools’ coaches and administrators. The luncheon will be at noon at Bridger Field House in Winston-Salem.

A list of participating schools and Football Scrimmage schedules follow. For more information, please visit www.newbridgebankjamboree.com or contact Tyson Hammer at (336) 369-0966.

(Reidsville, NC) – While it’s the offense that usually grabs the headlines, it’s the defense that ultimately wins championships.

Chalk one up to the Reidsville Raider defense this time.

The Raiders scored two defensive touchdowns in the third quarter Thursday and held Dillard to 40 yards in total offense on their way to a 34-6 win over the Bulls in Yanceyville.

The win capped a second straight 7-0 season for Reidsville and earned the team its fourth straight North Central Middle School Conference championship in the process.

The Raiders stifled Dillard’s running game by holding the Bulls to minus-35 yards rushing on a variety of sacks and other negative yardage plays. Khalid Broadnax had four sacks with one leading directly to an RMS touchdown.

Broadnax’s sack in the third quarter resulted in a fumble that was returned 38 yards for a touchdown by Myles Wallace.

Jayron Rankin had the other defensive score as he returned an interception 74 yards.

In fact, the Raiders did not run an offensive play the entire third quarter after taking a precarious 12-6 lead at halftime.

Wallace’s return came with 4:07 left in the third and Rankin’s score came on Dillard’s next possession with 35 seconds left in the period.

Reidsville took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on Jawan Hammock’s eight-yard run only to see Bryan Parker catch a tipped pass that turned into a 34-yard scoring play for Dillard to tie the game at 6-6.

The Raiders took the lead for good following the kickoff as Devonte Williams hit Davian Gibson in stride for a 74-yard touchdown pass and 12-6 RMS lead at the break.

Wallace and Rankin’s defensive scores put the game out of reach and Gibson closed out the scoring with a 10-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Dalante Enoch and Williams had conversions.

Reidsville was held to 86 yards rushing but Williams was 3 of 6 passing for 138 yards. Rankin had two receptions for 64 yards and Gibson had the 74-yarder to paydirt.

Other defensive stars for the Raiders were Hammock, Rankin, Omar McCollum, Jakel Pass, Ricky Pickard, Kashus Galloway, and Noel Cook.

In Fifth Quarter action, Cook had a scoring run for Reidsville. Other standouts were Kevin Cobb, Mike Golden, Jason McLaughlin (fumble recovery), B.J. Allen, Milik Williams, and Josh Eleby.

The Raiders were led by head man Reggie Chestnut along with assistants Calvin Simpson, Chico Galloway, Lee Woodson, Andre Williams, Michael Chestnut, and the late Top Griffin.

The 2010 conference championship is the sixth in eight years with Chestnut at the helm.
