During the meeting the Commissioners listened to a request from the Rockingham County Schools System for the approval to seek funds for the renovations needed to the swimming pool at Rockingham County High School. Associate Superintendent Bill Holcomb presented the request to the Commissioners with a estimated price tag of 1.7 million dollars, of which would include the repairs to the building, which has been damaged from the condensation from the chlorinated treated water. In addition to the structure repairs, the plans call for lowering the diving end of the pool to 4 feet deep to meet National Federation of State High School Associations regulations for competitive swim meets. The pool at Rockingham County High is the Home Pool for both Rockingham County High and McMichael High Schools. The Board of Commissioners instructed County Manager Lance Metzler and his staff to meet with representative of the school system to look at possible ways of funding the project and to report back to the Board of Commissioners with a list of options for their consideration.

The Rockingham County Schools also, sought permission for the Commissioners to purchase a 1.5 acre parcel of land on the Bethany Road, that is adjacent by property already owned by the Board of Education/School System for the Bethany School for the amount of $6,000. Monies for the purchase of the property is to come from the School District’s Capital Outlay Funds.

(Eden, NC) – The Shaw Power Group, the company building the new Eden Duke Energy facility, will receive a special Eden City Council proclamation in recognition for their generosity to the Eden community during the 2012 holiday season. “A Little Sacrifice” an organization started by a Shaw employee and Highway Patrolman donated more than $17,000 to the Eden Salvation Army in 2011. Two hundred and seventy-seven families, representing four hundred and eighty-five children in Eden and surrounding areas were served by the Salvation Army this year. The Shaw Power Group was invaluable to helping the Salvation Army achieve it’s goals.

The Shaw Power Group has employed more than four hundred workers to build the gas-powered Eden Duke Energy facility. In addition to their generosity during the holiday season, Shaw employees have cleared snow for residents along the road of the facility, enforced safe driving habits, and employed traffic officers, so their workers do not disrupt local traffic.

Eden Mayor John Grogan will present the proclamation to representatives of the Shaw Power Group at 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. “Shaw has done an outstanding job in responding to our community needs,” stated Grogan. “They are the epitome of a good corporate citizen and we are pleased to honor them with this proclamation.”
