Sheriff Page Encourages Safety Measures To Avoid Injury

(Wentworth, NC) – Every day millions of students use school buses as transportation to and from school. Although school buses represent the safest form of highway transportation, there are a number of safety factors of which both student and drivers should be aware. Hoping to ensure school bus safety, Sheriff Page encourages caution whenever school buses are present.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an average of 19 school-aged children die in school transportation-related traffic crashes each year and more school-aged pedestrians have been killed between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. than any other time of day.

“Children are often eager to get off the school bus because they are excited to tell their parents about all of the fun they had at school that day,” said Sheriff Page.

“It is crucial that parents re-enforce the school bus safety rules children learn at school.”

Sheriff Page also suggests that parents drive their child’s bus route with them to practice the proper safety precautions they can take to help ensure their child enjoys a safe ride to and from school.

Sheriff Page encourages all parents to discuss the following safety measures with their children:

            Student

Always arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.

While the bus is approaching make sure to stand at least three giant steps away from the curb, wait until the bus has come to a complete stop, the door opens, and the bus driver says that it’s OK to board.

Always walk on the sidewalk when preparing to cross the street near a bus. Make eye contact with the driver so that you are sure he or she sees you.

     Never walk behind the bus.

If you are walking beside the bus, walk at least three giant steps away.

Use the handrail when entering and exiting the bus. Take extra precautions to make sure that clothing with drawstrings and book bags do not get caught in the hand rail or door.

Never stop to pick something up that you have dropped when a bus is stopped. Tell the bus driver or wait until the bus has driven off to avoid not being seen by the driver.

Motorists

Remember that children are unpredictable in their actions. Take extreme caution when traveling in a school zone.

If there are no sidewalks, drive cautiously. Be more alert to the possibility of children walking in the road.

Slow down and prepare to stop whenever you see yellow school bus lights flashing.

Never pass a school bus when there are flashing red lights and the stop arm is extended. This is a sign that children are getting on or off the bus. Motorist must wait until the red lights stop flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus is moving before they can start driving again.

(Eden, NC) – On July 31,2010 vacation bible school was held at the old time baptist church in Eden, N.C.. The church is located on E. Meadow Rd. just past Miller-Coors brewery. We had an eventfull day which included ,the Reidsville Fire Dept’s. Smokehouse which was operated and brought to the church by Assistant Rockingham County Fire Marshall Tommy Curry. Curry taught the children and some adults about fire safety, also McGruff the Crime Dog who was assisted by Clarence Cheshire visited us and stayed the day with us. McGruff was very busy taking photos with the young as well as the old. McGruff was there to teach the children about crime and being a good neighbor (watching out for each other). We also had a visit from ‘ Robbie ‘ a Rockingham County Sheriff K-9 Officer along with his handler Deputy Jason Hutchens. Hutchens shared alot of information on what the K-9 does and a little about the life of a K-9 officer. ‘Robbie’ was a big hit!.

Our local hospital (Morehead Hospital) donated DNA and Emergency ID kits for all who attended, to help make us prepared in case of an emergency and also to help to protect our children. We had approximately 50 to attend the bible school and youth leader Mildred Cheshire was very pleased with all the children that attended. Along with all the festivities of the day the children also had crafts to do and a prise drawing. Everyone that attended was rewarded with pizza from Papa Johns in Eden, deserts, and soft drinks. The biggest reward of the day was the reward of God’s love.

At the closing of bible school, we did a balloon release. the balloons were tagged with notes that had the church’s name, address and phone number on it and the children also signed the notes on the back. The balloons were released in hope that someone will find one and it will brighten thier day and make them smile. Pastor Paul Gover wishes to thank everyone who helped to make the bible school, one to be remembered. Article Submitted by Clarence Cheshire

NSLI-Y, funded by the U.S. Department of State, is administered by a consortium of non-profit organizations led by American Councils for International Education and including AFS-USA, iEARN-USA and Concordia Language Villages. The merit-based scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation, support and testing for language study; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; applicable visa fees; three basic meals per day; and accommodations, preferably in a host family. The NSLI-Y scholarship enables Samuel to study Chinese in China for the summer.

Launched as part of a U.S. Government initiative in 2006, NSLI-Y seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal and informal language learning and practice and by promoting mutual understanding through educational and cultural activities. NSLI-Y offers overseas study opportunities for summer, semester and academic year language learning in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Farsi), Russian and Turkish. NSLI-Y scholars are between 15- and 18-years old.

The goals of the NSLI-Y program include sparking a life-long interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of young Americans with the skills necessary to advance international dialogue in the private, academic or government sectors, building upon the foundations developed through person-to-person relationships.

Through his participation in the program, Samuel will be in the vanguard of international communication and will develop the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community.

Applications for 2011/2012 NSLI-Y programs will be available at www.nsliforyouth.org in the early fall.
