Can someone help this Lady in distress?

Lady is a beautiful 8 month old lab mix whose owner can no longer keep her due to personal health reasons. Lady has a unique ivory coat that sports one sandy spot on her rump and two sandy ears. She is intelligent, well-mannered, UTD on shots, housetrained, and heartworm negative. Lady loves children and can be an inside/outside dog or an inside dog. She is sweet, submissive, and easily trained. Lady’s owners are willing to pay half the cost of spaying this dog.

If you are interested in dear Lady, please call P. McKee at 336-573-6083. Because of the situation, Lady does not have much time. If a home is not found promptly, she will be taken to the pound.

THIS DOG IS NOT AT RVH. PLEASE USE CONTACT INFORMATION BELOW.

Brenda is a lovely young female retriever mix that is between 1-2 years old. She has a soft brindle coat with a white chest and little white toes. Brenda loves attention and is eager to show affection.

Brenda spent the weekend at a volunteer’s home and these are her observations: “Brenda is an extremely intelligent and curious dog. She adapted well to several new experiences (car rides, adoption fair, living in my home ). Brenda was friendly to people, especially children, and got along with other dogs. She also was friendly to my dogs, even though they were loud. She was interested in my cats and approached them, but did not offer to chase them. Brenda is an active dog that needs to keep her mind engaged. She loves to manipulate objects (play with toys, find and carry things, investigate things) and would make an excellent family dog, agility dog, or therapy/assistance dog. She learns quickly and although she doesn’t seem to be completely housetrained now, if put on a schedule she should figure it out in no time. She quickly realized what ‘do your business’ meant when I took her outside. Brenda behaves in a crate, but I would recommend that she lives in a household where people are available to interact with her during the day if possible. This is a wonderful dog with so much potential.”

UPDATE: Brenda was a hit at the adoption fair, but no one stepped forward to apply for her. A dog trainer who observed her said that she had the potential to be an excellent therapy or service dog, given the proper training. Her time was almost up and she was scheduled to be PTS, but the Humane Society of Rockingham County stepped in to rescue her. Now she needs a forever home. Brenda’s adoption fee is $100.

If you are interested in adopting Brenda, please contact: Rockingham Country Humane Society 205 Boone Rd Eden, NC 27288 Phone: 336-623-4428 Email: sflovesanimals@aol.com

UPDATE: Oliver, an approx 2-3 year old, 50 lb male mixed breed, has come a long way since he was rescued! He has turned into a fabulous companion. With his warm gaze and expressive face, he can convey his feelings. He has mastered housetraining and is now an indoor dog. He adores people and wants to be with them; he even loves the resident cat! Several times a week Oliver attends doggy daycare and is one of the staff’s favorite pooches. He gets along well with his fellow playmates and is versed in basic obedience. Oliver has tested low-positive for heartworms, but his foster mom is following her vet’s protocol to treat him. He exhibits no negative effects from his current condition. Oliver is a true gem.

If you are interested in finding out more about Oliver, please call C. Russell at these numbers: 336-558-6439 336-545-7100 (daytime only) 336 939-2973

He might be successfully integrated with other dogs by an experienced owner, but he probably would be best as an only dog in the household.

Construction bids will be opened on February 18th

(Wentworth, NC) - The much-anticipated Rockingham County Animal Shelter is one large step closer to reality. After nearly two years of planning, the County has finalized designs for the facility and placed an advertisement for bids. The bids will be opened in a public meeting on February 18, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Commissioners’ Board Room at the Rockingham County Governmental Center in Wentworth.

Rockingham County began the animal shelter project in February 2008 with the formation of an Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, comprised of County Commissioners, animal welfare activists, veterinarians and county employees. In October 2008, the advisory committee launched the Rockingham County Animal Shelter Campaign, an initiative aimed at generating funds for the new 10,000 square foot animal shelter. To date, the campaign has raised over $135,000 in pledged private funds. The County has also been pre-approved for a loan and grant from the USDA Department of Rural Development. The exact amount of both the loan and grant will depend on the final construction cost.

The project will be bid as a core facility with two alternates. Alternate one consists of an adoption wing and administrative offices and alternate two features a spay and neuter clinic. The committee hopes to build all components of the facility this year, as the adoption wing and spay and neuter clinic are essential for reducing pet overpopulation and curbing the county’s staggering 80% euthanasia rate. Given the current economic climate; however, the facility may have to be built in phases. The Board of Commissioners will make that decision in March.

Those interested in bidding on the project, may view the advertisement at: http://www.co.rockingham.nc.us/pp/BidRFP.htm. In addition, a pre-bid conference will be held on

February 4, 2010 at 3:00 pm at the Rockingham County Governmental Center, Demonstration-Assembly Room, 371 NC 65,Wentworth, NC 27375.

For more information about the Rockingham County Animal Shelter Campaign or to get involved, please visit http://www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org or call 336-342-8342.

About the Rockingham County Animal Shelter Campaign

The Rockingham County Animal Shelter Campaign is devoted to building the animals of Rockingham County, NC the shelter they deserve and, subsequently, reducing the county’s 80% euthanasia rate. Rockingham County plans to open a new 10,000 square foot animal shelter facility in 2010. The County Board of Commissioners is committed to funding a very basic, bare bones shelter. In order to thwart the county’s pet overpopulation epidemic long-term, several features (particularly an adoption wing, bonding area, and spay and neuter clinic), must be included in the design. The campaign’s goal has been to fund these additional features privately. Through sources such as fundraising events, brick paver sales, corporate sponsorships, and grants, the campaign hopes to collect enough private donations to make the planned facility a reality. For more information, please visit http://www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org.
