(GREENSBORO, N.C.), November 3, 2011 — Coming soon to a neighborhood near you, the SPCA of the Triad will open the area’s only low-cost mobile spay/neuter clinic. The “Spay Waggin” will help local pet owners prevent unwanted births of cats and dogs by providing them with high quality, affordable sterilization services as well as some preventative vaccinations and other treatment.

Thanks to donations and other support from Rice Toyota, Tops and Trends, WFMY-TV2, Dog Days, and private gifts, the 38 – foot “Spay Waggin” clinic will operate 6 days a week and make rounds throughout Guilford, Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, Forsyth, Stokes, Caswell, and Rockingham counties. It is capable of providing 7,500 spay (for female) and neuter (for male) surgeries annually. “The key is to bring these services to people, often in rural areas,” says Linda East, DMV, “who might not otherwise be able or inclined to bring their dogs or cats in for surgery. Dr. East along with another veterinarian will operate their professional practices from the mobile unit.

“Our goal is to provide high quality care and to stop the suffering caused by unwanted litters,” says Brenda Overman, President of the SPCA of the Triad and life-long animal advocate. “People these days are often struggling just to feed their families and the pets they already own, much less additional pets. If we can stop the chance of pregnancy in these animals, then we’re helping families and their pets. We’ll also reduce the numbers of animals turned in to local shelters—that will save tax payers’ dollars. That’s a win/win for everyone.”

Although the clinic will be low-cost, Matthews Specialty Vehicles—which custom designs and builds a wide range of pet care and other vehicles, including the SPCA of the Triad’s “Spay Waggin”—has given every attention to detail. High grade stainless steel crates will house pets before surgery and provide private recovery space post-surgery. The unit even has sliding curtains to block the pet’s view while other animals are being prepped for surgery, thereby reducing their stress levels. The surgery room equipment is state of the art and separated from the intake area in order to maintain a sterile space. If the “Spay Waggin” needs to operate in an area with no electrical outlet, the self-contained generators will provide power for lights, cooling, heating and operating procedures.

The mobile clinic is the realization of a dream for Mrs. Overman who has witnessed too many times the suffering of unwanted pets. She volunteered for more than a decade with the Humane Society before, in 1994, founding the SPCA of the Triad “at her kitchen table” along with a handful of other animal-lovers, including Marguerite Adele Yates. Ms. Yates, now deceased, was a well-respected animal cruelty investigator, both state and federal, and wildlife rehabilitator in the Triad for many years. Today, the SPCA of the Triad continues to rescue and re-home more than 600 pets each year. Yet, Overman says “as important as rescue is to the animals we save and the people who love them, we simply cannot adopt our way out of pet overpopulation. We must address the root cause of the problem through sterilization. That is the whole purpose of this mobile clinic.”

Costs for spay/neuter surgeries will range from $70 to $125 (a bit higher in rare special circumstances, but no extra charge for in-heat or pregnant animals.) The fees include a complete physical exam as well as rabies, distemper/parvo, and FVRCP vaccines. Low cost vaccines and some other services will be provided to non-surgical patients as well. Feral cats (domestic cats that live in the wild) are $25 each and no appointment will be necessary for those animals.

The “Spay Waggin” clinic will be open Monday – Saturday. The public is invited to an Open House from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. on November 20th at the SPCA Center located at 3163 Hines Chapel Road, Greensboro, N.C. Adoption Fair Finds Forever Homes for 24 Dogs & 5 Cats in Rockingham County

(Reidsville, NC) – Rockingham County Animal Shelter Director Kevin Baughn is excited because 29 animals were recently adopted, thanks to Petsense in Reidsville.

“People worked hard to find forever homes for Rockingham County animals … we had 24 dogs and 5 cats adopted during the Oct. 1-2 adoption fair,” Baughn explained.

“I would like to thank Deb Sterling, Joan Stembridge, Cathie Basil with Petsense, and the Animal Protection Society for working with the Rockingham County Animal Shelter to coordinate such a successful adoption fair,” Baughn added.

This is the first annual adoption fair for Petsense, and by far, the biggest adoption event for Rockingham County Animal Shelter. The Reidsville Petsense was No. 1 in the nation with the Petsense Adopt-A-Thon the first weekend in Oct. Petsense will give every group who participated over the weekend a $100 donation to sponsor future adoptions.

The vigil will be held at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter, located at 250 Cherokee Camp Road, in Wentworth (next to the Business and Technology Center)
