INVESTIGATORS SEEK LEADS IN OVERNIGHT SCHOOL VANDALISM

(Wentworth, NC) – On Wednesday May 22, 2013, Rockingham County High School reported that graffiti had been painted in several locations there on the campus; and that their Cougar mascot statue had been damaged.

The graffiti found is pictured below, along with a vehicle captured on surveillance video overnight at Rockingham County Middle School (located behind Rockingham High School) that may have been involved.

Anyone with information about this incident, the vehicle pictured below, or anyone that may have purchased or been in possession of a large amount of orange and white spray paint recently is asked to call the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office at 336-634-3232 or Rockingham County Crimestoppers at 336-349-968

(EDEN, NC) – Sheriff’s Investigators are currently seeking the whereabouts of Emily Alexis Helmstetler, age 15, of 157 Carolina Ave., Eden, NC. Emily was last seen at her home on Sunday, May 19th at around 11:30pm.

Emily is described as a Caucasian Female, 5 ft. 3 in tall, 105 lbs. with Blonde hair and Blue eyes, last seen wearing a Red shirt and unknown color shorts.

• On May 13, 2013, Aquarius Phadyal Johnson of  W. Washington St., Eden, was arrested on a warrant for Injury to Personal Property and charged on a citation for Possession of Marijuana. Johnson is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 27, 2013.

• On May 13, 2013, Michael Derwin Christopher of Albert Rd., Stokesdale, was arrested on a warrant for Failure to Appear. Christopher was placed under a $21,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on May 30, 2013.

• On May 13, 2013, Jerri Lynn Mabes of  Orchard Dr., Eden, was served a criminal summons for Simple Physical Assault. Mabes is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 27, 2013.

• On May 13, 2013, Adam Matthew French of  Tate St., Reidsville, was charged on a citation for Possession of Marijuana. French is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 11, 2013.

• On May 15, 2013, Robbie Marlee Blizzard of  Manley St., Eden, was arrested on a warrant for Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle. Blizzard was released on a written promise. She is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on May 28, 2013.

• On May 17, 2013, Malette Collins Rosser of N. Oakland Ave., Eden, was arrested on a warrant for Failure to Appear. Rosser was placed under a $500 secured bond. She is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on May 29, 2013.

• On May 18, 2013, Tyeshia Joi Tinsley of  George St., Eden, was arrested on a warrant for Failure to Comply. Tinsley was placed under a $210 secured bond. Tinsley is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on May 20, 2013.

• On May 18, 2013, James Young of  Morgan Ford Rd., Ridgeway, VA, was arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired. Young was released on a written promise. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 4, 2013.

• On May 19, 2013, Edmond Boye of Olympia Dr., Greensboro, was arrested and charged with Driving While License Revoked and No Insurance. Boye was placed under a $1,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 4, 2013.

• On May 19, 2013, Jerri Lynn Deacon of  E. Aiken Rd., Eden, was arrested on a warrant for Violation of Domestic Violence Protective Order and Threatening Phone Calls. Deacon is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 13, 2013.

• On May 19, 2013, Agustin Maldonado Briseno of  Stovall Loop, Eden, was arrested and charged with Driving While Impaired. Briseno was placed under a $500 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on June 6, 2013.

• On May 20, 2013, Myron Dylan Meadows of  Blackstock St., Eden, was arrested on a true bill of indictment for Larceny. Meadow’s was placed under a $5,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Wentworth District Court on July 22, 2013.

• FRAUD – On May 13, 2013, 211 Gracie St., Eden, victim reported that someone had fraudulently used his personal information.

•ASSAULT –  On May 13, 2013, Victim reported that he had been assaulted at Lisa Beth Apartments.

• BREAKING/ENTERING & ASSAULT – On May 14, 2013, 405 Monroe St., Eden, Victim reported that someone broke into his apartment and assaulted him.

• ATTEMPTED LARCENY – On May 15, 2013, Victim reported that someone attempted to steal his Moped at 1028 Ga. Ave., Eden.

• SHOPLIFTING – On May 15, 2013, report filed of a Shoplifting at Wal-Mart located at 304 E. Arbor Ln., Eden. Charges are pending against the suspect.

• LARCENY – On May 15, 2013, Victim reported that his tag was taken from Wal-Mart located at 304 E. Arbor Lane, Eden.

• LARCENY – On May 15, 2013, Victim reported that someone stole Medication from his vehicle at The Dollar General located at 519 Morgan Rd., Eden.

• LARCENY – On May 15, 2013, Victim reported that someone stole Chain Link Fence Gates from the old K-Mart building located at 201 E. Meadow Rd., Eden.

• BREAKING/ENTERING & LARCENY – On May 16, 2013, Trade-It located at 730 S. Van Buren Rd., Eden, was broken into and reported that a Car Stereo and DB Power Amp was stolen from the business.

• LARCENY – On May 16, 2013, victim reported that someone had stolen two Flat Screen Televisions from 1123 Williams St., Eden.

• LARCENY – On May 16, 2013, 910 Branch St., Eden, Victim reported that someone took her vehicle and had not returned the vehicle. Wilson also advised that her Debit Card and Cash were stolen from a cigarette case.

• LARCENY – On May 16, 2013, Victim reported that someone broke into a vehicle at 536 N. Bridge St., Eden and stole a Radio.

• LARCENY – On May 17, 2013, 330 E. Meadow Rd., Eden, Victim reported that someone stole her Medication.

• LARCENY – On May 17, 2013, 708 Miles St., Eden, Victim reported that someone stole Cash and Medication.

• SHOPLIFTING – On May 18, 2013, report filed that someone stole several items from the Dollar General located at 1200 E. Stadium Dr., Eden.

• VANDALISM – On May 18, 2013, 1311 Center Church Rd., Eden, Victim reported that someone damaged a vehicle at the residence.

• LARCENY – On May 19, 2013, 165 E. Aiken Rd., Eden, Victim reported that someone stole her medication.

 WENTWORTH, NC (May 20, 2013) - Rockingham County Government will launch a spring billboard campaign today and this week in Rockingham County, Greensboro, and near the NC/Va. state line.  Exciting, colorful billboards will illustrate why Rockingham County NC is a FUN place to live, work and play.

The FUN outdoor advertising images include: a girl in a kayak on a river; a couple eating ice cream at a festival; a dad and son fishing; and a man biking outdoors.  The four images will be displayed starting today on an electronic board (Battleground & Cotswold in Greensboro).  The poster boards will be displayed this week per weather conditions.  The billboards may be viewed on the County’s website at http://rc.municipalcms.com/pView.aspx?id=32241&catid=407

Concepts from the billboard campaign will be utilized in other platforms to communicate a consistent message of FUN experiences in Rockingham County NC.  The billboard campaign was developed by Rockingham County Government’s Public Information Office and Fairway Outdoor Advertising.

The FUN outdoor advertising goals are to:

1.   Encourage local, civic pride

2.   Push the name, Rockingham County NC

3.   Illustrate FUN experiences in Rockingham County NC and create an energizing buzz about Rockingham County NC

4.   Encourage residents and visitors to Search Rockingham County NC FUN locations and search the website www.co.rockingham.nc.us

For two and a half days, the commissions met with department heads to hear their planned savings and their needs for the fiscal year 2013-2014. This was my fifth or sixth year to attend these meetings and there is always something that stands out. One year the library director told about having two libraries – one in Mayodan and one in Madison. He said there was six acres of land the McMichaels left to erect a library. Working with the then library director for about six months, we came up with a plan that got things moving. I have been told, by the current director, that proposals for such a library had been going on for twenty-five years, which seems like a long time. I may have upset some for putting a strong push on to get this moving. I think the reason it took so long to get it going was resistance in the two towns to work as one. This was the most contentious item I gathered in all of the budget meetings I attended.

This year’s budget was presented with many sound original and saving ideas. Mable Scott proposed putting up three billboard signs on Highway 220 from Virginia to inside the city limits of Greensboro to let people know what we have to offer in ROCKINGHAM COUNTY. I think that is a good idea as sometimes people do come here by accident, as I did forty-eight years ago.

The airport request was given by Dr. Keys who is the chairman of the airport authority. There are leases that have expired and one hangar was removed as the lease ran out. The airport has the option to buy existing hangars or let the owner remove it. As the Authority has no funds to buy with and federal money can’t be used to buy these buildings, they have not much choice but to let them go. Maybe, if it has not already been done, our congressman or senator could help free up some of the federal funds.

Ron Tate, who is director of water/sewer and building projects, presented his needs for the year. The biggest thing that was brought up was the increased cost of energy with our courthouse and jail, animal shelter, and the old Wentworth school to mention a few. Someone mentioned tearing down the old school, which has been brought up before many years ago. Alumni of the school have been opposed to the idea in the past, but I don’t know how they feel now. It seems that the expense of maintaining the school could make a difference, as all county taxpayers are paying the bill.

There was one outstanding report from tax director Karen Carter about the high number of home foreclosures the county faces and the cost involved.

Overall the commissioners seemed to be a concerned about the budget and the cost.

The public opening/pre-bid conference for this project will be held at 10:00 am May 29, 2013.  This opening is mandatory for all persons wishing to submit a bid.  The meeting will be held in the Conference Room at ADTS, 105 Lawsonville Ave. Reidsville, NC 27320.

What’s RIGHT WITH Our Schools

(Rockingham County, NC) – Jill Barker’s third grade class at Leaksville-Spray Elementary School currently studied economics, entrepreneurship and consumerism. To correlate with this study, third grade students worked together to make “critter” pencil toppers and “critter” note holders. The students sold their goods at school to help raise money for the Rockingham County Animal Shelter. Students and teachers have been very supportive of this worthy cause at Leaksville-Spray Elementary School.

We would like to thank the students,staff and parents for all their support and believing in the shelter.

Jill Barker came by the shelter and handed our Director Kevin Baughn a donation of over $100 that these third graders raised and that they are continuing to work on to raise more funds for the shelter.

(Rockingham County, NC) – McMichael High Volleyball Coach, Marty Woods, received the Naismith Coaches Award for Rockingham County at the 2013 Rockingham County Schools Athletic Champions Banquet on May 15, 2013.

This national award is named for the late Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. The Naismith Coaches Award was created, by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), to honor a coach who represents sportsmanship, character, teamwork, service, integrity, honor and excellence.

In 2009, for the first time in the nation, the Naismith Coaches Award was presented by the FCA to a high school coach in Rockingham County, Jimmy Teague, former Reidsville High School football coach. Additional Rockingham County Schools Naismith Award recipients: 2010 – Greg Frey, former Morehead High School wrestling coach, 2011 – Woody Wall, Rockingham County High School girl’s basketball coach, 2012 – Bob Bailey, McMichael High Athletic Director.

Greensboro- Cone Health and its employees invested nearly $199 million in free care, classes, services and donations to the communities it serves in fiscal year 2012. Almost $185 million of that was patient care for which Cone Health did not receive compensation. “Governments everywhere are cutting payments to hospitals as a way of controlling healthcare costs. It is vital that policymakers and the public understand that hospitals provide millions of dollars to improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve,” says Cone Health Chief Executive Officer Tim Rice. “Continued cuts endanger those efforts and create unsustainable growth in uncompensated care.”

Uncompensated care grew $13 million in FY 2012. Uncompensated care is charity care, bad debt and the shortfall between what government pays for healthcare through Medicare and Medicaid and what it actually costs to deliver that care. Cone Health has provided $1 billion in uncompensated care since 2001.

In addition, Cone Health contributed $14.1 million in monetary donations, volunteer hours, training for healthcare professionals, and community education and outreach.
