“It’s not so much about who wins the games, as it is about learning teamwork and learning the fundamentals of basketball and cheerleading”, Pastor Randy Hester stated, “It’s also about building some good friendships. It’s a blast, the kids are having a ball.”

The Christian-based program, led by Greg Light, not only teaches basketball skills and drills, but also during the halftime of the games the youths participate in a Bible story lesson at center court.

• Jerri Manspile, whose daughter, Katie is a second year cheerleader – “I love it. It is a wonderful program, it teaches the kids to interact with other kids, as well, it teaches them good sound values.”

• Tim Kennedy, whose daughter Regan is a first year basketball payer – “She loves it, she can’t wait to come to practice and the games, she loves the devotionals.”

Merchants in Downtown Reidsville were offering specials, along with refreshments; Carolers were singing at the Tree located at the intersection of Scales Street and Morehead Street; and laughter of young children filled the air as they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause, and shared with them their wish lists. Hayrides were available and there was even SNOW blowing in the wind at the intersection of Gilmer and Scales Streets.

The complete, eight-day route included stops in Elkin, Mayodan, Mebane, Henderson, Rocky Mount, Plymouth, Manteo and Corolla.

This was Rockingham County’s third time hosting the Cycle NC event. Previous times were, in 2001 at the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Educational Center in Reidsville and in 2004 at the YMCA in Eden.

Located along the Olde Leaksville Shopping District, Riverfest features activities for kids, Vendors, Live Music, food and this year, performances by the Purina Incredible Dog Team, exhibits from the Carolina Raptor Center and Cold-Blooded Encounters, as well as the ever popular Lil Miss Riverfest Contest.
