Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt; with Lisa Frazier Page. THE PACT is the true story of how three young men join forces to beat the odds and become doctors. They grew up on the streets of Newark, facing city life’s temptations, pitfalls, even jail. But one day these three young men made a pact. They promised each other they would all become doctors, and stick it out together through the long, difficult journey to attain that dream. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt are not only friends to this day-they are all doctors. This is a story about the power of friendship … of joining forces and beating the odds. A story about changing your life, and the lives of those you love most-together. Beside their personal stories, the doctors share practical steps that can be useful to friends making their own pact.

Copies of THE PACT are available at all library branches.

Rockingham County Reads is a community-wide reading event that encourages citizens to read the same book and to discuss the issues raised by the book. The program is a partnership between the library, the Friends of the Library, the Reidsville Human Relations Commission, Rockingham Community College, and other interested individuals and organizations in Rockingham County.

(Reidsville, NC) – The Upward Basketball and Cheerleading program at Community Baptist Church, in Reidsville, NC is designed primarily to teach children (k-6) skills, sportsmanship and how to have a positive attitude. Now in it’s fifth year of helping teach those skills to approxamitly 130 area youths, the program fills the Community Baptist gymnasium each Saturday with eager players, Cheerleaders, and their Family members.

“It’s not so much about who wins the games, as it is about learning teamwork and learning the fundamentals of basketball and cheerleading”, Pastor Randy Hester stated, “It’s also about building some good friendships. It’s a blast, the kids are having a ball.”

The Christian-based program, led by Greg Light, not only teaches basketball skills and drills, but also during the halftime of the games the youths participate in a Bible story lesson at center court.

What Parents Say About the Program:

• Jerri Manspile, whose daughter, Katie is a second year cheerleader – “I love it. It is a wonderful program, it teaches the kids to interact with other kids, as well, it teaches them good sound values.”

• Tim Kennedy, whose daughter Regan is a first year basketball payer – “She loves it, she can’t wait to come to practice and the games, she loves the devotionals.”

Registration is open to area youths K5 through sixth-grade, and for more information about registration, contact Community Baptist Church at 336-342-5991.

About Upward Sports

Upward Sports, the world’s largest Christian sports league for children, provides a fun kids sports experience based on healthy competition. Last year, more than 550,000 K5 through sixth-grade kids had a great basketball, soccer, flag football or cheerleading experience through one of their 2,400 leagues or camps

Storyline: In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggle to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders.

Claudia Puig, USA TODAY ‘The Grey’: Drab, but the wolves look great

What starts as a tense and moody survival thriller fairly quickly becomes tedious, forced and far-fetched as a septet of men is preyed upon by a wolf pack in the Alaska wilderness.

Wolves are much maligned in literature and films. The Grey (* * stars out of four) takes the notion of their vicious natures to new extremes as dozens of hulking, bright-eyed beasts attack a ragtag assortment of plane-crash survivors with startling ferocity.

In the new movie The Grey, Liam Neeson dances with wolves that, for the most part, get the best of a band of grizzled oil rig workers who are stranded in the Alaskan wilderness after a harrowing plane crash.

All organizations must reside and carry out projects within Rockingham County.

Organizations that receive general support funds through the N. C. Arts Council are not eligible for Grassroots funds.

Applications and support materials must be complete and received by the grant deadline.

WHAT THE GRASSROOTS ARTS PROGRAM FUNDS:

GRANT EVALUATION CRITERIA: Subgrant applications are reviewed by a panel of community members including artists, county and public officials and board members of ACMC among others. The panel evaluates each application based on the subgrant guidelines and the following criteria:

Duane Best Auditorium located at Morehead High School in Eden.

Last year 33 contestants in 29 acts competed for cash prizes in the Foundation’s inaugural event which raised $7,500 for patient assistance and the Best Auditorium seat replacement project.

Auditions for this year’s production will be held on Saturday, February 18, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Best Auditorium. Audition forms are available online at www.morehead.org under “News & Events,” and at the following Eden locations:

• The Front Porch, 702 Washington Street ;

• Party Plus, 349 W. Kings Highway;

• The Small Pleasures Gift Shop at Morehead Memorial Hospital; 117 E. Kings Highway; and,

• The Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation office, 618 S. Pierce Street (in the Wright Diagnostic Center).

Audition forms must be turned in to the Morehead Hospital Foundation by Friday, February 10.

Jennifer Boyte, the Foundation’s Annual Fund Chairman, said the event is being held earlier this year to give talent from area dance and drama groups a chance to participate before dance competitions start in the spring. The show will be at an earlier time, a matinee at 3 p.m., so people who do not like to drive at night will be able to get home before dark.

“There will be seven (7) cash prizes ranging from $200 to $50, plus the popular People’s Choice Award,” stated Ed Holbrook, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We are looking for different types of acts for the Talent Show. If you can juggle, do magic acts, play various musical instruments, dramatic readings, comedy, ventriloquism, or puppetry—anything that is entertaining and in good taste—then you are who we are looking for to showcase in this year’s Talent Show.”

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to Morehead Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Care Program and to help establish a Healthcare Scholarship that will benefit a graduating senior at Morehead High School.

For more information about the “Eden’s Got Talent Show” or the purchase of tickets, please call the Foundation office at (336) 627-6334. Tickets will be on sale the last week of January and will available at The Front Porch, Party Plus and the Morehead Memorial Hospital Foundation office.

(Wentworth, NC) - Todd Drake’s newest art exhibit, “Help: Hidden Work, Hidden Lives,” shines a light on marginalized workers. It explores how many sought to bring honor to their work; how work options affected an individual’s life; and how those options sometimes affected families for generations. It is an artistic story using mixed media collections of words, photographs, videos and objects and he is still seeking stories from locals, especially those who worked in area mills.

This is the second major body of work by Drake since coming to Rockingham Community College in 2008. As a fine arts instructor, Drake emphasizes to his students that content drives the engine of art.

Name any art period or piece and Drake will point out its content:

Picasso’s Blue Period – “He was reacting to the death of a dear friend.”

Abstract art – “After World War II, artists delved into their feelings of war’s banality. It expressed their raw nerves and energy.”

“The Last Supper” – DaVinci’s mind was complex. In addition to light, dark, form and subject, he placed the cups so that if looked at from left to right, they create a musical score.”

After emphasizing the importance of content, Drake then leads by example. Initially, this resulted in Drake’s exhibit titled, “Esse Quam Videri: Muslim Self-Portraits,” a photographic story that looks at the complexity of the American conscious in the wake of 9/11 and its affect on practicing Muslims (currently exhibiting at Guilford College). The exhibit has been welcomed in galleries around the country and in Bahrain, a Muslim country.

Although his newest exhibit debuted at NC A&T State University on Jan. 12, Drake says the full exhibit will not be finished for three to four years.

That is because he still seeks stories to be included: stories to flesh out and complete his idea. Therefore, he is asking local citizens to contact him with stories about their work or the work of family members. He is looking for stories of those who were forced into a particular work life and brought honor to it; those who worked a job but dreamed of work they couldn’t attain; those who were exploited in the work they did; those who hid their work due to feelings of shame.

To contact him, call 342-4261, ext. 2191 or e-mail to draket@rockinghamcc.edu.

By seeking these stories and creating art from them, Drake is fulfilling his role as a teacher. By focusing his artistic eye on our society’s issues, he is directing the eyes of his students to see the potential power of the art they choose to create.

For those looking for something more than New Year’s resolutions of diet and exercise this year, consider reshaping your life by becoming a volunteer at the North Carolina Zoo.

The zoo is seeking individuals willing to make a minimum 90-hour per-year commitment serving as exhibit interpreters, wildlife rehabilitators, Zoo hosts, retail assistants, gardeners, giraffe-deck operators and more.

Volunteers serve the Zoo in a variety of ways through sharing their knowledge, skills and talents. Last year, Zoo volunteers, unpaid interns and service groups served nearly 38,000 hours.

The typical volunteer season is April-October, although some positions are year-round. For a detailed listing of job descriptions, time commitments, required skills and more, visit the Zoo’s website at www.nczoo.org/volunteer. Just complete the online application to be notified of upcoming training dates.

Volunteers are the heart of many organizations, and the N.C. Zoo is no exception. Volunteers are an integral part of what makes the Zoo a wonderful place to visit.

To learn more about one-day opportunities for service groups, churches, businesses, clubs, fraternities, sororities, ball teams and others, contact the Zoo’s Volunteer Coordinator Toy Jarrett at 336.879.7712 or at toy.jarrett@nczoo.org.

Experience the Zoo in a way like never before; volunteer.

The zoo is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Dee A. Freeman, Secretary; Beverly E. Perdue, Governor.
